‘What Came First… ?’ exists in two parts
Part 1- ‘We Emerged As Limbs’
How can we use performance to think of times and worlds that are beyond a human scale? The performance is design-led: water drips on a scolding hot plate, limbs emerge from bin bags and a lightbulb responds to the sound of the audience. The work is boldly visual, stirring up feelings of the cosmic scales of time we exist within. It dialogues with the beginning of the universe, the beginning of us and what will be the end.
Part 2- ‘Lone Rangers Rhythms Do Not Die’
How can live performance exist as an archive? Exploring my own diaspora within this age of globalisation, I web together stories and material to create a fuller picture of my ancestry. The piece uses materials as artefacts to present the narratives of my elders through displacement and assimilation. I employ ritualising performance to search for truth within their stories – building on top of, merging, meshing… but can we ever truly fill in the gaps?
