John Hollingshead was a man of many lives: a bohemian, a journalist, and a theatrical impresario who managed London’s popular Gaiety Theatre. He grew up with the music hall, and this talk will explore the music hall’s influence on the Gaiety.

Eilidh Innes completed her PhD on the life of John Hollingshead at Anglia Ruskin University in 2021. Her research centres around the life of the nineteenth century journalist and theatrical impresario, John Hollingshead, and the ‘lost’ Gaiety Theatre, London. Eilidh has published a feminist analysis of the Gaiety Girls in the Women’s History Network Journal and on the links between Hollingshead and the writers Charles and Mary Lamb in The Charles Lamb Bulletin. More recently she has written biographies of Gaiety Girls Connie Gilchrist and Phyllis Broughton for the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.
